She stands in front of the camera with her hair with bangs and the colorful scarf she wears. Along with Michael Smith, he was teaching English to thousands of people on television.
Professor Doctor Zülal Balpınar became the unforgettable face of an era with the lectures broadcast on TRT screens about 40 years ago.
Saying that he never used a promoter, Prof. Dr. Zülal Balpınar describes those days as follows:
“When the Open Education Faculty was founded, English was a compulsory course in the early 80s. I accidentally got into this business with an English friend who came to the university for another purpose. Mike was speaking in English, I was speaking in Turkish. I never used a promter. I sat a classroom in the middle of the camera and lectured to that class. “
“Nobody knows much now”
The program, which started in 1983 and was shot in Eskişehir, lasted for many years and reached thousands of people.
Balpınar, explaining that there were letters from prisoners in prisons at that time, said, “’Please send us a book. We all want to study English in the ward’ he said. In this way, there were people who learned English and studied English. One day we went to Ürgüp. One little boy shouted, ‘Mom mom, aunt on TV!’ yell. I said that if I go seven floors deep, there will be someone who recognizes me from somewhere. It was like that back then, no one knows much now,” he says.
“Reading is something that improves language a lot”
They became a very compatible duo with Michael Smith, whom he lectured with. Balpınar is still in contact with Smith, who lives in England, and often commemorates those days.
Zülal Balpınar, who made a generation love English with the program broadcast on TRT screens and never gave up teaching English despite the passage of years, now continues to train English teachers at Anadolu University.
And the teacher, whose parents know very well, also has advice for the new generation: Reading is something that improves the language a lot. Both in Turkish and English, and you should definitely read it.
