Stating that lymphoma occurs when lymphocytes, the body’s defense cells, become cancerous and grow uncontrollably, Pediatric Hematology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Bozkurt said that the lymph nodes are like the castle of the body. prof. Dr. Bozkurt made a statement on the occasion of September 15 World Lymphoma Awareness Day.
MORE VISIBLE IN ADULTS
Stating that lymphoma is mostly seen in adulthood, Prof. Dr. Bozkurt said, “Childhood cancers constitute a low rate of 1-2 percent among all cancers. Generally speaking, lymphomas constitute 5 percent of adult cancers and 19-20 percent of childhood cancers. When compared to the population, we may encounter more lymphoma patients in adults than in childhood.”
ATTENTION TO WEAKNESS, APPEAL, OBSTACLE FEVER IN CHILDREN
Expressing that lymphoma occurs mostly with lymph node enlargement in adult patients, Prof. Dr. Bozkurt said, “In children, it may present with some findings such as lymph node enlargement, uncontrolled growth, weakness, loss of appetite, persistent fever, and some bruises in different parts of the body.”
DO NOT FEAR LYMPH GLAND GROWTH
prof. Dr. Emphasizing that children should not only be concerned about lymph node enlargement, Bozkurt said, “Contrary to adults, 98-99 percent of lymph node enlargements in childhood are caused by benign infections. This is a very common picture in childhood. It is a finding that indirectly shows that the immune system of children works well. If lymph node enlargements continue despite the treatment given, if growths occur in additional abnormal places, liver, spleen enlargement, respiratory distress occur; In addition, if there are new and abnormal symptoms that we have not encountered in our child before, such as weakness, loss of appetite, and prolonged fever, we recommend that the nearest physician be consulted.
ATTENTION TO bruises
Reminding that bruises on the body can be in every child, Prof. Dr. Bozkurt said, “The bruises on the lower legs may be due to the impact. Apart from this, bleeding and coagulation problems may also present with findings in the form of bruising. Families should not immediately think that it is a malignant disease. Mostly, benign diseases emerge under it. Bruising accompanied by other findings may be significant. If these abnormal findings are accompanied by these, the awareness of the families should be increased and they should apply to the relevant physician as soon as possible.
UP TO 99 PERCENT CHANCE OF SUCCESS IN TREATMENT IN CHILDREN
Expressing that the chance of treatment in lymphoma disease is very high in parallel with the developments in the world and in science, Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Bozkurt said:
“We achieve an improvement of over 70 percent in adult patients and 90-95% in children. The main treatment method we use for recovery is chemotherapy. In addition, there are methods such as radiotherapy, rarely surgical treatments, smart drug treatments, which we call targeted treatments, and the use of our genetically modified defense cells, which are used in adult patients, in treatment. We use necessary treatment methods such as stem cell transplantation in patients with multi-resistant diseases.”
prof. Dr. Bozkurt also mentioned the importance of not interrupting treatment follow-ups and healthy nutrition during the pandemic process.
