The escape ramp to the Sakaltutan Pass in Erzincan, which connects the east of the country to the west via Central Anatolia and is one of the important routes in logistics transportation, saves lives by preventing possible accidents due to brake failure and tire explosion on the sloping road.
On the international D-100 highway between Erzincan-Sivas, which connects Eastern Anatolia, Central Anatolia and the west of the country, on the Sakaltutan Pass, where the slope is up to 8 percent in places, heavy tonnage vehicles get out of control due to reasons such as brake failure and tire bursts. The study was initiated by the General Directorate of Highways.
As a result of this study, an escape ramp was launched by the 16th Regional Directorate of Highways in 2019 at the highway crossing, where trucks, trucks and passenger buses carrying dangerous goods such as fuel or chemicals, for aforementioned reasons, traveled for kilometers uncontrollably and reached the city center, putting traffic safety at serious risk. done.
Vehicles immersed in sand and gravel can stop safely
The floor of the escape ramp, which is approximately 465 meters long and 6.3 meters wide, was covered with gravel and sand. In case of danger, the tires of the vehicles that enter the escape ramp, which is right next to the highway, by seeing the warning signs, sink into the ground covered with sand and gravel, preventing possible accidents.
The vehicles remaining on the escape ramp are then safely removed from this area by the teams.
The ramp, which provides a safe stop against brake failures and tire bursts, which are almost the “fearful dream” of truck, lorry and bus drivers, prevents the loss of life and property both by coming to the rescue of the drivers and ensuring traffic safety.
The escape of the vehicles out of control thanks to the escape ramp was reflected in the images.
The events in the city where the vehicles that went out of control were saved from an accident at the last moment thanks to the escape ramps were recorded by security cameras.
In the images, it was remarkable that the heavy tonnage vehicles, which went out of control due to brake failure while descending the slope, escaped from an accident by entering the escape ramp covered with gravel.
35% of the vehicles using the road are heavy vehicles.
Mustafa Horuz, Sivas 16th Regional Director of Highways, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the international D-100 highway, located in the east-west axes, is an important route.
Drawing attention to the density of vehicle traffic on this route, Horuz said, “The distance between the summit and the escape ramp is 6.5 kilometers and the slope is 8 percent. The slope in question adversely affects the braking systems of heavy vehicles and causes accidents in this region. “We had to create a place where they could escape. The average daily vehicle traffic is 4,600, and 35 percent of the vehicles using our highway, 1655 of which are heavy tonnage vehicles. When we look at the country in general, we see that we have a large heavy vehicle ratio.” said.
Escape ramp prevented dozens of accidents
Stating that the escape ramp built in the region is the only escape ramp in the area of responsibility, Horuz said, “Dozens of accidents have been eliminated with the construction of the escape ramp. It is known that the vehicles whose brakes failed after a 6.5-kilometer descent in the previous years could not stop and traveled 25-30 kilometers into the inner city. It is also known that the teams escorting the heavy tonnage vehicle, after the driver of a tanker, which was traveling uncontrollably on the highway due to the release of the brake, asked for help from the police, took this vehicle to the inner city in a controlled manner. However, after this escape ramp was built, these problems disappeared completely.” he said.
Providing information about the technical features of the escape ramp, Horuz said, “Our escape ramp is 465 meters long and 6.3 meters wide. A 1 meter high sand bed has been created inside this area. A 4-meter wide side road has been built to remove the vehicles remaining on the escape ramp. There is also a pocket for the rescue vehicles to maneuver comfortably on the road. used the phrase.
