In a written statement made by the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, it was noted that the units of the naval forces caught 101 irregular migrants of different nationalities in the first operation carried out off the Kerkene Island of the Sfaks province in the south of the country.
In the statement, it was stated that the immigrants sailed towards Europe from the city of Zuvara in western Libya on June 11, and that 6 women and 4 children were among them.
It was reported that the immigrants were taken to the commercial port in the city of Sfaks and handed over to the coast guard teams for official procedures.
In the second operation, it was stated that 13 irregular immigrants of Tunisian nationality were caught, 40 kilometers away from Djerba Island in the southeast.
Information was shared that irregular migrants sailed from Djerba Island to Europe on 12 June and that 2 women were among them.
At least 500 migrants died from early 2021 to May
Every year, thousands of migrants sail from Africa to the Mediterranean to reach Europe in hopes of a better life. Some of the migrants manage to reach Europe, while others die at sea.
Carlotta Sami, a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), announced on May 4 that at least 500 migrants died at sea while trying to cross to Europe on the Central Mediterranean migration route from the beginning of May 2021.
