exp. Dr. Bengisu Ay made important statements regarding the flu epidemic, which increased with the cooling of the weather. exp. Dr. Ay stated that influenza, as it is known among the people, is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects the nose, throat, bronchi and sometimes the lungs, can show a mild or severe course, and said: path disease. It is a process that is expected to increase significantly in the number of sick people in these months. Sudden onset of high fever after an incubation period of about 2 days is usually characterized by dry cough, headache, muscle and joint pains, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, severe weakness, fatigue, chills, sometimes diarrhea and vomiting. The cough may be severe and persist for 2 weeks or longer. Most people recover within 1 week without the need for any medical treatment. It has a severe course in the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases, pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections may develop and may cause hospitalizations and even death. Definitive diagnosis is only possible with rapid influenza tests that give results in half an hour or less.
“The treatment in the first 48 hours is more effective”
Emphasizing that patients should not use drugs based on hearsay information without consulting a doctor, Uzm. Dr. Bengisu Ay said, “It should be known that the treatment started within the first 48 hours after the onset of the disease symptoms is more effective. In addition, people with flu should take plenty of fluids, pay attention to their diet, wash their hands frequently, cover their mouth with a paper tissue when coughing and sneezing, and if there is no tissue, they should rest at home for a few days. Influenza viruses can easily be transmitted from sick person to other people, and the disease reaches its peak during the winter months when people spend more time indoors. Influenza is generally transmitted by the behavior of people who are sick, such as speaking, coughing and sneezing, and by passing the virus-containing droplets to the mouth, nose and eye mucous membranes of people who are 1 meter or closer to the sick person. More rarely, it can be transmitted by touching surfaces, tools and equipment contaminated with virus-containing droplets first with their hands and then by bringing their hands to their mouth, nose or eyes. In order to prevent the disease, one should stay away from crowded and closed environments as much as possible during the flu season, try not to contact, hug or shake hands with sick people, wash hands frequently and pay attention to personal hygiene rules.
“You should get the flu vaccine every year”
exp. Dr. Pointing out that there are many subtypes of influenza viruses, which are the causative agents of seasonal flu disease, Ay said, “Viruses that are quite different from the virus seen in the previous year can make people sick in the following years. This situation clearly explains why we can get the flu every year and the necessity of getting vaccinated every year. It is emphasized every year by the World Health Organization (WHO) that the most effective method of preventing the disease is the flu vaccine. For this reason, it is recommended that people in the risk group, where the disease progresses severely and even deaths can be seen, should have the flu vaccine before and during the flu season. In our country, as in other countries, flu vaccines are given free of charge by the Ministry of Health to people in the risk group every year, with a physician’s prescription. At the same time, other respiratory viruses that cause flu-like diseases are also present in the circulation at high levels (respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, parainfluenzavirus, adenovirus, coronavirus, enterovirus, etc.). The dominance of other respiratory tract viruses in the circulation varies according to the seasons. While the rhinovirus, which causes colds, is dominant at the beginning of the flu season, it is seen that the respiratory syncytial virus, which especially affects children under the age of 5, has been dominant in the last weeks.
