US Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Mekonnen met in the capital Addis Ababa.
After the meeting, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Dina Müfti stated that the focus of the meeting between Mekonnen and Feltman was the year-long armed conflict between Ethiopian forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Mekonnen told Feltman that the government had approved humanitarian flights to the UNESCO heritage city of Lalibella in the Amhara regional province, which is still under rebel control and the commercially important town of Kombolcha.
Meanwhile, African Union (AfB) Horn of Africa Ambassador Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly visiting Addis Ababa to continue mediation efforts.
It was stated that Feltman and Obasanjo pressured the parties to end hostilities immediately and without preconditions and for a ceasefire.
