prof. Dr. Sedat Üstündağ told Anadolu Agency (AA) that obesity continues to increase and cause health problems all over the world.
Stating that many chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are common in obese people, Üstündağ emphasized that obesity negatively affects the immune system (immune system).
Stating that obesity threatens public health due to its prevalence, Üstündağ said, “The danger is much greater in morbid (excessive and diseased obesity) obese, which we accept at the level of disease. Obesity is a risk factor for Covid-19 and for the negative consequences of Covid-19. ” said.
Üstündağ stated that the immune systems of obese people cannot fight viruses and bacteria in a healthy way.
Pointing out that obese people infected with Covid-19 have a high risk of having a severe illness, Üstündağ said:
“It prevents the immune system from functioning properly and fully fighting against viruses, bacteria and external pathogens. Therefore, especially in people who are morbidly obese, they are prone to diabetes, hypertension and cancer as well as being open to infections.
Obesity alone can develop kidney failure, and in this sense, like all negative consequences, the possibility of more negative consequences increases with the susceptibility to Covid-19 infection and the more severe Covid 19 disease.
prof. Dr. Üstündağ underlined that obesity can be prevented with a healthy and active lifestyle.
Recommending that carbohydrate foods should be consumed less and packaged foods should be avoided, Üstündağ emphasized that 30-40 minutes of brisk walking a day should be transformed into a lifestyle.
