The importance of proper nutrition in terms of women’s and babies’ health is clear. You should also follow these nutritional recommendations during pregnancy. Adapting the life and nutritional habits you have gained during IVF treatment to your whole life will actually open the door to a healthy life for you.’ said Prof. Dr. Yücel Karaman talked about what should be considered in nutrition during the IVF treatment process.
-One of the most important factors that increase the success of IVF treatment is to be at an ideal weight. Those who are overweight have a reduced chance of success in IVF. Those who are not at ideal weight should see a dietitian before starting treatment.
- The most important thing to pay attention to is to drink enough water every day. Many people do not realize that they are not drinking enough water and are dehydrated. Depending on the weight of the person, at least 10-12 glasses of water should be drunk daily. This amount is 1 liter more in summer months. Drinking enough water dilutes the blood, increases blood flow to all organs and the uterus, and facilitates the removal of toxins from the body.
- All foods should be natural and organic. Vegetables and fruits should be fresh, various types and colors should be consumed, and there should be no one-sided nutrition. At least 5 servings of vegetables and fruits should be consumed per day. Meals waiting longer than 12 hours should not be consumed as they are not safe and healthy. GMO foods, refined-processed, packaged products should not be consumed. Food should not contain substances such as pesticides, hormones, antibiotics. All of these have negative effects on the hormonal system and therefore the reproductive system.
-Protein-rich foods should be consumed. Especially animal proteins; eggs, fish, lean red meat, milk and dairy products should be consumed. Patients who are vegetarian or who are not good with meat should give weight to proteins of vegetable origin and should use vitamin drugs containing vitamins of animal origin.
-Carbs are also part of a healthy diet. Complex carbohydrates (natural fiber foods) should be consumed from carbohydrates. That is, fruits, whole grains, honey should be consumed. Refined carbohydrates, unnatural sugars, namely pure sugar, tea sugar, artificial sweeteners, especially foods containing saccharin, processed and packaged products should be avoided.
- It is thought that foods rich in zinc may have positive effects on fertility. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the consumption of foods rich in it. Nuts, whole grains, legumes, potatoes and dairy products are rich in zinc.
- It has been shown in studies that less mature eggs are obtained in women with high consumption of saturated fat. For this reason, the consumption of foods containing saturated fat or trans fat, especially margarine, solid fats, fast-food type foods and beverages, should be reduced or cut off. Unsaturated fatty acids are beneficial for our body. Unsaturated fatty acids are found in oils, especially olive oil, nuts and fish.
- Unpasteurized milk and dairy products should not be consumed. There is a risk of transmission of tuberculosis, brucella and listeria infection in insufficiently pasteurized milk.
- Salami, sausage, bacon, raw meatballs and sushi made from raw meat should not be consumed. Instead of cooking methods such as frying and grilling; Boiling, steaming and baking methods should be preferred. Shellfish; mussels, lobsters, deep-water fish should not be consumed because they contain heavy metals.
-Caffeine-containing foods, ie coffee, tea, carbonated drinks and chocolate consumption should be reduced. If coffee is to be drunk, Turkish coffee should be preferred to granulated coffee, dark chocolate to regular chocolate. Raw eggs and things made from raw eggs should not be consumed due to the risk of salmonella infection. Foods containing soy or vegetable estrogen (phytoestrogen) should not be consumed during the treatment. Smoking and alcohol should definitely be stopped. These both reduce the quality of the embryo and make it difficult for the embryo to attach to the uterus. If pregnancy occurs, it may cause a risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, growth retardation, preterm birth and some abnormalities.
-Some foods, herbal medicines, nutritional supplements that are thought to be beneficial for fertility may have adverse effects in the treatment process. It can reduce the effectiveness of drugs used in IVF treatment. For this reason, such drugs or nutritional supplements should never be used without consulting a doctor.
