After the hot and partially drier summer season, our eyes, which get tired and dry, are waiting for new dangers and diseases this time in the autumn season. Although autumn is thought of as a season consisting only of rain and yellowing leaves, the effects of each season on our own body should not be ignored. Especially in our country, the autumn period is the season in which air changes are observed most frequently and accordingly the problems in the upper respiratory tract are experienced the most. Along with the upper respiratory tract, our eyes get their share of this season.
Dr. Çağlayan Aksu said, “Adenoviral infections, which usually show symptoms of cold and are misrepresented as a simple flu, cause serious infections in the eyes and even permanent visual disturbances.
First of all, pain, redness, burning, stinging, foreign body sensation in the eye and burring up to the degree that the eyes cannot be opened in the morning can be the first symptoms of the disease called adenoviral conjunctivitis and popularly called conjunctivitis. This disease, which is highly contagious, spreads rapidly especially in public transportation vehicles and crowded environments. Eye fever, which started in one of the family members, affects the whole family due to the lack of attention and the personal items used in common.
Over time, the same situation in both eyes can lead the person to get away from both his social life and business life. Even if the symptoms of the disease decrease, the damage it causes in our eyes despite the improvement of the disease in the future may cause haze in vision and even low vision. People with complaints should apply to the nearest ophthalmologist and be treated and followed up until full recovery is achieved.
Stating that one of the most common eye diseases in seasonal changes is dry eye disease, Dr.-Aksu continued his words as follows: “Dry eye, which has become one of the biggest problems of our time, is more common especially in windy and dry regions.
Smartphones, tablets and computer monitors that we use constantly during the day are the biggest cause of eye dryness.
Although the adjustment of the screen light or the filters partially work, the reduction of our blink reflex without realizing it while looking at the screen and the increase in the contact time of the eye with the air are the main factors.
Considering the opening of schools in the fall and the fact that government offices begin to work more intensively, it can be said that autumn is a period when dry eyes peak.
In dry eyes, there may be symptoms such as burning, stinging, feeling of sand in the eye, tiredness in the eyes especially in the evenings and difficulty in opening the eyes in the morning. Even if the dry eye does not seem serious, it may cause complaints such as blurred vision in the eye and decrease in contrast vision. It is important to use the appropriate treatment without interruption,” he said.
Dr.Çağlayan Aksu,”And lastly, allergic conjunctivitis, which is more common in the spring but increases in the autumn. Allergic conjunctivitis, which is more common in seasons with intense weather changes, usually manifests itself with redness and itching in the eyes in individuals who have an inherent allergy or are prone to allergic diseases. Even if cold application provides partial comfort, full recovery cannot be achieved if the factor causing the allergy is not eliminated.
Since it is difficult to remove the agent, treatments that we call symptomatic, that is, to temporarily reduce the complaints, are applied. The most important issue in eye allergy is the permanent damage to our eyes in the future and in case of the persistence of the allergy. In addition, it should not be forgotten that constant and severe eye scratching will cause a progressive and very serious eye disease called Keratoconus, and if the disease called keratoconus progresses, it will permanently reduce vision and even cause an eye transplant problem.
