Mehmet Fidan, Optician Program Lecturer, said that making a decision accompanied by an optician when buying prescription glasses or sunglasses will prevent possible problems in the future, and stated that glasses are an important accessory in one’s life, in addition to correcting eye defects and preventing the sun. Fidan made statements about the use of sunglasses, which is especially intense in the summer months.
“GLASSES MUST BLOCK ULTRAVIOLET (UV) RAYS”
Stating that ultraviolet (UV) rays are rays that cannot be perceived by the eye and are harmful to human health, Mehmet Fidan said, “For eye health, first of all, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the sunglasses have a UV light blocking feature rather than the color of the glass. Therefore, a quality sunglasses should have a certificate that it blocks UV rays.
“CE (EUROPEAN CONFORMITY) BELGESİ BULUNMALI”
Fidan pointed out that the clarity of the objects, that is, the details should not be lost when sunglasses are worn, stated that it is of great importance for the product to have a reliable registration certificate of CE (Conformité Européene), which shows that the minimum safety conditions in European Union standards are met.
“MIRROR GLASS ALONE DOES NOT PROVIDE UV PROTECTION”
Instructor See. Mehmet Fidan stated that most of the incoming light is reflected back in sunglasses with mirrored glasses, so they can be used in places where the sun’s rays are intense, for example, at the seaside or in places covered with snow, but he warned:
“The use of mirrored glasses reduces the amount of light coming into the eye, but does not affect the UV blocking feature. Similarly, the use of sunglasses with a different lens color has no effect on UV blocking.”
“FAKE SUNGLASSES DAMAGE THE RETINA”
Underlining that the damage caused by the use of fake sunglasses to the eyes can occur years later, Lecturer. See. Fidan stated that the poor quality lenses of the sunglasses purchased with the idea that ‘it blocks the sun’s rays, nothing happens’ will definitely damage the retina of the eye.
Fidan stated that when fake glasses with no UV blocking feature are worn, the pupils of the eyes will open more and they will be more exposed to harmful UV rays with the shadow effect provided by the glasses, and said that the use of fake glasses without UV filter should be avoided.
